Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about playing, creating, and learning with IT Wordsearch.

General & Gameplay

Q.What is IT Wordsearch?

A.

IT Wordsearch is an educational puzzle platform designed specifically for developers, CS students, and IT professionals. It turns passive vocabulary learning into active retrieval practice through terminology-focused word searches.

Q.How do the distinct game modes work?

A.

We offer several modes: Classic (standard relaxed play), Time Attack (race against the clock), Debug Mode (find 'bugs' or specific tricky terms), and the Daily Challenge (a globally synced puzzle that changes every 24 hours).

Q.Are the words just random tech jargon?

A.

No. The words are curated into specific technical domains like React, Python, DevOps, and Cybersecurity. Each word is accompanied by a functional hint or definition rather than just a dictionary entry, helping reinforce real-world context.

Q.Is an account strictly required to play?

A.

No, you can play standard categories and the Daily Challenge without an account. However, creating an account allows you to save custom puzzles, track your leaderboard standing, and retain your historical statistics.

Education & Classroom Use

Q.Can I use IT Wordsearch in my computer science classroom?

A.

Absolutely. Many fundamental CS concepts require strong vocabulary retention. IT Wordsearch serves as an excellent 10-minute warmup or review activity for bootcamps and university courses.

Q.Do you offer printable versions for offline use?

A.

Yes. Every category has a dedicated printable view optimized for black-and-white A4/Letter printing, making it perfect for device-free classroom environments.

Q.Can teachers track student progress?

A.

Currently, progression is tracked individually via user accounts. For classrooms, we recommend having students complete the puzzle and share their completion time/score or submit the physical printed worksheet.

Custom Puzzles (Word Search Lab)

Q.How does the Word Search Lab work?

A.

The Lab lets you input your own custom list of terms and hints. Our engine then procedurally generates a unique puzzle grid. This is available at the /create endpoint.

Q.Can I create puzzles for non-tech subjects?

A.

While our engine focuses on technical styling, you can technically input any text into the custom creator. However, the themes and interface are heavily tailored toward a developer aesthetic.

Q.How do I share a custom puzzle with my team/students?

A.

Once you create and save a puzzle, you will receive a unique shareable link. Anyone with the link can play that exact puzzle.

Technical & Account Questions

Q.How is the Leaderboard calculated?

A.

The leaderboard tracks points earned primarily through the Daily Challenge and completing puzzles across different difficulty levels. Speed and accuracy (fewer incorrect selections) yield higher scores.

Q.My Daily Challenge isn't updating. Why?

A.

The Daily Challenge relies on your device's local clock to determine the current day's seed. Ensure your system time is accurate. The puzzle resets at midnight local time.

Q.Do you have an API available?

A.

We currently do not offer a public API for puzzle generation or data extraction. The glossary and puzzle engines are strictly accessible via the web interface.

Q.I found a bug or incorrect definition. How do I report it?

A.

Please reach out to via our Contact page. We regularly update the glossary and game data strings based on community feedback to ensure technical accuracy.
